taa daah!!! - My pup

It is after lunch and I am fighting off the zee monsters by the thousands. HELP!

Got to write something to keep my mind alert. Have any of you guys got a pet? A terrapin (I have 2 hugeee ones at home)? A hamster ( I had more than my fingers could count)? Fishes ( I had more than my fingers and toes put together can count) Cats? Dogs? Or any other exotic pets?

A couple of months ago, I adopted a shetland cross pup from a guy staying at Lim Chu Kang. It was a pretty ulu (read: god-forbid place) area and he is a GREAT lover of shelties. I really do mean great coz he has like 10 shelties there, one sole schnauzer and an extremely over-weight and noisy chihwawa on his farm. OMG!

Well, my dog's mum's a schnauzer and I have a hunch that he was an accidental product between the champ sheltie (his dad, i mean my pup's dad and not the guy's dad) and the sole lonely female schnauzer (although the guy said he was helping his friend to source for new homes for the pups but i beg to differ). There were 3 pups in total (2 males and a female). The female one was already adopted so there were only 2 boys boys left.

We picked him coz he looks more like his dad (my family are lovers of shelties) and he has the most innocent eyes (okay, all pups have cute innocent eyes). We decided to name him 'Whisky' after my mum's late dog. Whisky was given a quick bath, dried and we carried him home. He was such a darling and did not even bark once on the journey home (except he shivered slightly).

He was around 3 months old at that time. Initally, we were a little afraid it will be hard to paper-train him but luckily (for us) he took less than a month to figure out the correct place to pee and poo. Whisky's not a barky dog, to date he has barked less than 10 times and he is coming to 11 months old by the end of this month! Guess, I got to thank the guy who had him up for adoption. His dogs were all silent angels, who greeted us with friendly wags of their tails when we first stepped into the farm. Thank god!

It is interesting to own a cross-breed pup coz you will never know how your pup will turn out. The guy had told us there will be no guarantee which parent the pup will take after. I did some research on the net and discovered that cross-breed pups tend to not inherit the defective genes that their purebreed parents have and are more hardy and intelligent too.

He loves to play catch and tug of war and is amazingly not picky with toys. We made cloth toys for him out for our old cushion/bolster and pillow covers and tie them into knots (saved us tons of $). Whisky loves chewing on them and always tempts us with the toy and pulling it away from us when we try to reach out for it. Sneaky boy :p

A bundle of energy he runs round the table during a game of catch and never gets dizzy (but I do) and gets all anxious when he could not figure out where we are hiding during hide-and-seek. The most funniest thing was once, when my mum hid behind the curtains with her feet peeking out, Whisky just walked pass to and fro without discovering (or smelling) that she was just a nose distance away! I guess his sense of smell leaves much to be desired. haha

Anyway, he is totally spoilt. He sleeps with my mum infront of the fan and even lay his head on her pillow just like a baby. And my mum even pats him to sleep! You can see our family do not see him as a dog but more of like a little baby. I love to carry him to the windows to watch the traffic outside my flat (Thanks god he is still of carry-able size).

Bath time is also a pretty funny drama. Although he doesn't really resist bath time but he does do a bout of running away from my mum when she calls out for him. As with all dogs (except the hair-less ones), he looks so ugly when he is wet. We usually get a good laugh when we see him all hair-less...

Basically, I can't imagine life without Whisky. Although he has only been with us for like 7 months plus it feels as if we had him for ages. He is soooooo part of the family now. I often shudder at the thought of him being left unadopted at the farm. There so many abandoned pups in Singapore and their fate are a pitful lot. That was the main reason I decided to adopt instead of buying a pup.

It is such a joy to see him waiting patiently behind the door when I return from a hectic day of work and seeing his joyful face and waggy tail. Made my day seem so much more cotton candy sweet.

Am at work now... can't wait to go home and give him a great big HUG!
