Almost kena bird-shitted.
Was looking for an empty table with a colleague during lunch time at the cafeteria below our office.
Spotted table in question and stood there for a moment to discus what we were going to order.

All of a sudden, a splatter of purplish pink semi-liquid thingy descended upon the table inches from me. We looked up and saw a mynah perched high above. with its butt in the air.

Realisation hit us like thunder and we moved away rapidly (with me cussing). Thankfully, the 'output' missed me *shudders*

I now will look warily up before I seat myself down at a table downstairs.

Had a good dosage of scarsam and witty fun on Saturday.
Was at the Drama Centre at the National Library Bugis with the BF and his pals from SIM. The event?

The Hossan Leong Show!

Peppered with a variety of comedy and paraody such as the Iron Chef (with a true blue japanese theater actor) and a motley crew of contestants (maids) hailing from China (sultry, high pitched complete with moss thick underarm hair), Thailand (a 'kup ka' sprouting ladyboy played by Chua Enlai), Indonesia (an ironing fanatic who loves her k-drama) and the Phillipines (played by Hossan Leong sporting a bowl haircut with a penchant for fist fights and instant mee).

'Can you tahan..ahan..ahan' is a spoof the real-life Subaru Challenge where contestants brave day, night, sun and rain with their palm plastered on a car to outlast each other. At the show, the contestants are down to a yoga guru and a straitlaced accountant firmly fixed to an electric motorbike (a prize that went to a lucky audience in the show via a random lucky draw) while the tired host just wants to go home and came up with wacky ideas to make one (or both) contestants to simply just give up.

Other highlights include the huanted IRAS tale where restless spirits are shown the light to heaven and Hossan's brand of stand-up comedy that was brillantly satisfying.

The little segment which pokes fun at a new MP in the marine parade GRC line up got a little tiresome towards the end. The Chestnuts (another theatrical comedy) version of the retro-ish Ribena advert was much more refreshing. As with a lot of such theatre drama, politics is topic that is being mocked up endlessly but still at the Hossan Leong show, a couple of gems shone through.

Well worth the tix price though the aircon seems a little on the light side or was it 'cause we were luffing too hard?

Nursed a horrible throat inflammation + fever on Sunday all the way through to yesterday. Even though, I am now typing out this blog entry in the office, I am feeling slightly wobbly and generating tons of phelgm mush.

And I have 2 tooth extractions this coming Monday.

Anyways, the main point of blogging this is to rant my frustrations about being sick for 3 days straight.

I started experiencing heavy-headed syndrome on Saturday (was musuem hopping at National Museum and MBS) and than developed into cold shivers on Sunday. Fever broke through the night and dragged myself to see the doctor in the morning.

Took medicine and KO-ed. Sequence repeated itself thrice. Only ate watery rice + veg soup and slept ALOT. Such that when night time came, I had trouble knocking off.

The alternative hot and cold shivers was the worst of the lot. One moment I would be clamouring for cover and the next I can't wait to kick it off the bed. I would awake in the afternoon sweaty yet skin feel cold to the touch.

This carried through the NDP holiday *boo hoo* cannot go out jalan jalan =.=

During the moments, I wasn't sleeping I would be:

1) Bent over the washroom basin trying my darnest to puke out phelgm. It has the irritating cloyness to stick to my throat resulting in hoarse vocals.

2) Logging on to Facebook but soon enought juz looking at my mobile gave me a wave of nausea

3) Feeling sorry myself . Such a total waste of time doing nothing.

Had dinner with the BF at Ichiban Sushi PS outlet yesterday and this is what was spotted on our table after we gorged on plate after plate of sushi.

A snake? An alligator?

The above soya sauce 'masterpiece' was an unintentional and accidental creation after I spilt some of the sauce while pouring the contents on the small black plate/bowl. The spilt sauce congregated under the plate and when we removed it for the service staff to clear our table, this was what we saw.

Love those beady eyes! Hahahaha~

If one is to peer closely at the rallies and reports, the public seem to lapse into rousing cheers everytime an opposition party or member launches a verbal attack on the governing party.

When proposed policies are brought up (some suggested policies IMO are atrocious and simply empty promises or sugar coated treats which will NOT work nor ease any social problems - crudely put, juz bitter carrots which look good from far but tastes far from good), the crowd don't seem equally enthu or go into kallang wave mode of approval.

Are the opposed parties juz capable of 'scolding' and 'aplogising 'on the behaf of members of the governing party to elicit cheers from the public?

This is just too sad.

It irks me.

Really.

I am not one to indulge in politics or lap up every report and rally. But I am increasingly pissed with the youths of today who think that opposing is cool.

Is it cool to vote for an incapable or dogey political party in your area simply coz you dislike the ones in power?

Give them some credit. Do not overwrite what they did do. Do you think the peace we enjoyed so far simply fell from the sky and land in our laps?

I do not believe societal problems such as housing will be solved with a new party in charge. It will at most just ease up and erupt a whole new lot of other problems.

Be realistic. In time to come when a new party you favour comes into power, they will encounter the same wave of opposing voices from the citizens. It's a cycle of acceptance, simmering disgruntledness and an outbreak of revolution.

Vote based on informed choices.

The preparation certainly paid off.

Not to mention the silent prayers to the forces high above.

I passed my piano exam!

Honestly, the preparation up to the exam date was hell. Not knowing what to expect and not really the most diligent of all students ( my practise sessions on the scale was erratic), I was expecting the worse after the 15minute (darn fast) exam came to a close.

I was a bundle of frazzled nerves on my exam day and no matter how I tried to calm myself, I was still fidgeting like mad when I reached the venue while waiting for my turn.

The good:
My exam was in the late afternoon (I was the last candidate) meaning I had precious time in the morning and afternoon to rehearse.

My examiner was a friendly ang moh lady who sweetly allowed me to repeat my scale test when I stumbled a lil in the begining.

The scale + aural + sightreading pieces was easier than expected.

The bad:
I totally screwed up my second exam piano piece.

You can practically hear my trembling notes in the begining.

I had nightmares of blanking out infront of the piano during the exam.

The aural was a torture for I wasn't 100% sure that I nailed it.

Never been glader to see the P word.

TLK ROARS into town.

Caught the famous Broadway show with the Company yesterday evening at the Sands Theater.

A spectacular show indeed. From the beautiful and creative props, lovely songs, amazing stage and the stage actors' energy and dedication.

Was touched by a few scenes where Simba interacts with his dad and blown away by a scene where he talks to his late dad via a water image.

A must-watch!

My previous tuition kiddos are like in secondary and JC/Uni (I tutored them when they were in pri sch).

My ex-sec sch teacher's kids are in pri sch (He was just fresh out of NIE when he taught us in sec sch and single).

My dog is 5 years old (adopted the darling when he was a mere 3 months pup).

Been working at my current company for 4 years and counting.

The bf forgot to bring his out on Sat while traipse around Katong and PP. He kept reaching into his pocket to fish his mobile out to check on bus timings only to realised his precious is sitting on the desk at home next to his laptop.

Recently, I have also linked up my iphone to my office email. A god-send when I out of office and need to keep a tab on my email but not so when I am on leave/MC. Hence, I am more than ever 'attached' to my mobile.

Dreamt of a heart-stopping dream of sort last nite.

In the dreamscape, I walked away from a particular bus-stop w/o realising that I had forgotten my bag. Only to re-trace my steps moments later. Unfortunately, my bag was replaced by a group of girls chatting. The bag wasn't in sight.

I was frantic. My first thought was that my iphone was inside my bag!

I hurriedly asked them if they had seen my bag and one of the girls said that her dad had taken my bag to the neighbourhood police post (NPP). Feeling relieved, I told her to bring me to the NPP and that I could identify easily the items in the bag to prove that it truly belonged to me.

She agreed and together we crossed the road to get to the NPP. Halfway across, at the narrow patch of road divider, I spied my bag lying on the grass. I turned to the girl and asked why is it my bag thrown there when her dad was supposed to bring it to the NPP?

I couldnt recall her answer when I woke up.

Anyways, I quickly unzipped my bag and to my dismay, my iphone was missing!

Instead the culprit replaced it with 2 nokia handsets. -.-

(in reality, I doubt stealers will do that)

I was downright pissed, worried and sad. Wanted to make a police report but could not find a NPP.

Then *poof!* I woke up.

Tucked into dim sum buffet at Mandarin Oriental on a hazy lazy Saturday afternoon.

An ala-carte buffet with free-flow of dim sum items and priced at $48+++ (works out to about $57 per pax after all the taxes and stuff), you also get a choice of ONE soup, appetizer, main course and dessert. For $118, all the items are free-flow plus the champagne too.

I went for the former $48 since I don't really hankered for champagne in the afternoon and seriously I was there for the dim sum, the other items am happy with a single choice each (plus, how much can you stomach within the stipulated 130am to 3pm duration?).

Mandarin Oriental was dressed in deep dark wood, comfortably lit and very spacious. With oriental (duh!) accents and decors with overly being intrusive of cheena, I was quite impressed with the hotel. The dim sum place is call Cherry Garden and although I made a reservation for 2 about a week earlier, the place wasn't really packed with ample empty tables around.

Service was polite and efficient (though it was hard to capture the servers' attention initally). The dim sum IMHO was above average with some winner and some passables. Sorry for the lack of pics, as I was too busy savouring those delicacies to whip out my cam. :P

What I LOVE:
The crystal dumpling filled with fresh juicy prawns and topped with silvers of shark fin
The very soupy (drool) xiao long bao with an external thin slice of carrot base
The shao mai topped with a mini slice of tender abalone
The thick yet sweet fish broth soup
The cripsy netted roll filled with apple slices and prawns. To dip with yummi wasabi sauce that is not too choking.
The fluffy char siew bao with very fragrant meat (that is not overly fatty)

What I did not like:
The beef brisket though tender was abit too strong on the beef aftertaste
The fried carrot cake with bean sprouts which looked like the normal chai tao kuay you get in hawker centres (which seriously the latter tasted to much nicer)

The interesting:
The avocado cream + walnut ice cream dessert presented in a glass jar, decorated with a single aloe leaf and made an impressive fairy-like entrance with frothy dry-ice.

Would I go a 2nd time? Definitely! Any babes wanna go with me and do dim sum? :p

Epic malu-ness of the week.

To be precise, a colourful way to end the work week,

Was out to meet a client with the boss and after we got out of his car and making our way out of the carpark, I tripped over a ankle-high metal bar.

I committed the age-old crime of SMS-ing while walking and throwing caution to wind and whatever gravel that was beneath my feet. Before I could even scream/screech, I found myself tripping over and falling (albeit in my slow motion in my own perspective) to the ground.

My first couple of thoughts during those spilit seconds?

My boss haf to witness my very ungracious fall. And i hope i dun scratch my face.

Luckily my face was unscathed and I was dressed in jeans which shielded my knees/legs from getting scratched.

Attended a pal's wedding yesterday evening, and it was a pleasant night for a decade gathering with ex-sec school teachers for I had not seen since graduation.

Coincidentally, its been an exact years since I last seen my sec 4 physic teacher and the October 10 dinner does indeed mark quite a significant reunion. Does bring back fond memories and how all of us have grown up over the years, Our teacher is now currently dad to 2 primary school going girls and honing his craft at a local Junior College. From raising questions in class pertaining to physics to sitting at table and conversing to him ala friend-mode, it made me realised how much time has passed.

My secondary school years marked the best of academic years and the most memorable be it the school itself, the teachers and the classmates/friends whom I am still the closest to.

Congrats to my pal for tying and knot and cheers to a blissful union to you and your hubby!

I have to confess I am panariod about waking up late for work/school/appointments/meetings. Which explains the presence of not 1 but 2 alarm clocks on the table just next to my bed.

The 2nd alarm is a buffer should in the scenerio whereby the 1st alarm fails to ring on time/battery died halfway in the night/stabbed the snooze button too many-a-times/haywired after I throw it a distance away at my disgust having to wake up.

And having experienced almost all of the above scenerios and having the trusty 2nd alarm clock on stand-by to jolt me awake, have successfully proven that it is a necessity for me.

I also have a tendency to set the first alarm 10 minutes early and the 2nd alarm true to the real time. Don't ask me why - am just panariod about oversleeping.

So what boils down to today's entry is the fact that the 1st alarm died on me at the grand time of 15 minutes pass midnight - which is exactly 10 mintues after I popped in to bed. Lovely.

I just have to thank heavens for my buffer alarm.

I officially declare that I loathe those INCONSIDERATE MRT communters with stone-ass backpacks.

I repeat is those INCONSIDERATE F**kers that I loathe. Having depended on the public transport including both trains and buses, I have met both considerate (people who actually have the polite manners to check that their backpacks are not protruding into other passengers etc) and the RUDES.

This morning's experience was a typical one that had me tsking loudly but unfortunately the culprit was plugged into her earphones and blissfully unaware. I got into a train cabin that was relatively cramp and was standing near the doors. This lady then got in from the next station, proceeded to swung around to face the door and her rock-ass hard backpack scratched my hand and jabbed me in the tummy (not to mention also pushed me rudely further into the cabin - which was already brimming with people). All this while she seemed to have no inkling of what she was subjecting me to. -.-

So fine, i got pissed and tsked loudly. I thought maybe I was over-reacting. Maybe she really didn't mean it. Maybe she really was that thick in the head.

Moments later, after quite a number of passengers alighted at Orchard Station, this lady moved in and proceeded to 'scratch, jab and pushed' another fellow lady commuter. The victim uttered a loud Ouch! which went unheard due to the culprit's plug-ins. WTF.

And this culprit did not even realise it a single bit. Please if your backpack is so huge + hard, can you pretty please when you board a crowded train, check if its actually causing pain to others? Or unload it on the floor or something?

Recently, Singapore Kindness Movement released a new courtesy campaign to encourage commuters to be considerate during their train and bus travel jouneys (ie. letting alighting passengers to get off first and to move into the train cabins instead of crowding at the exit/entrance etc).

Previously, a similiar campagin was launched with the singlish-loving Phua Chu Kang fronting the ads and the introduction of (IMO) a noisy jingle that was played on a frequent basis at the MRT platforms. This time round SMRT invited the iconic and stage veterans - Dim Sum Dollies to do the job.

If you noticed, their 'Love your ride' jingle is played everytime a train pulls into a station. I kinda like this new jingle which is subtley more soothing to the ears and pretty much pulls back to the time I walked into a theatre to watch a play. But of course, everyone has their own opinions and some have blasted the jingle for getting on their nerves with the clockwork broadcast each time.

Oh wells. You can't please everyone.

Was down with a potent combo of flu + cough + a fever (that never really did set in).

Wacked pretty bad from the above since Monday such that I had to be excused from work on tues and wed. Was shivering in bed on Mon and Tues nights even though i had my room door and windows shut, yet it felt as if the room was momentarily transported to the artic.

Felt terrible.

Dragged myself to see the doc under the blazing sun, got my cocktail of med and drifted in and out of slp. Spent the minimal waking hours to check my email and hp alerts before going back to a dreamless slumber.

Diet of those days were: variations of porridge

Even today's lunch was porridge.

The worst part now (that the chills have passed on) is the incessant coughing (hack). You know how sometimes you just want to cough it all out but can't coz

1) you are seated in a ultra silent theatre watching some solemn movie. even a gentle whisper sounds like an atomic bomb

2) in a crowded train and a single wheeze/cough would warrant kiasee looks from fellow passengers

3) in a meeting with big shots and would look extremely rude to keep interrupting the meeting with your coughs

4) just feel downright paiseh

well, number 2 happened to me and what was even worse was to swallow back the urge to cough. Succeed for maybe 5 mere minutes and then go off in an uncontrolled outburst of coughs that shook the cabin.

WTF.

For those who love hotpot/steamboat buffet, there is a particular chinese eatery (chong qing hotpot) at the circular basement of Suntec City that serves up quite a steamy affair.

For an estimated $45 per pax (not inclusive of non-default soup bases), you get to dine in a comfortably-spaced environment ( I did not emerge reeking of food in my hair/clothes), polite servers, very hygenic and thinly sliced meat (the beef!) and a decent array of ingredients.

I especially love the beef, fish paste, meatball, prawns (darn the skewers though) and the occasional specials that are on da house. The 8 treasure tea ($4.50 per pax) which comprises of a potent mix of ginseng, wolfberries, dates, preserved honey melons and etc, imparts a sense of calm to the senses.

Default soup bases include - spicy M La, preserved veg chicken broth and normal chicken broth.

It is the only hotpot buffet place at the circular basement area so is pretty diffcult to miss. Do call to make reservations (6337-6921).

All through my academic years, when mugging for exams, more often than not you will moi burying my nose in my books/lecture notes within the comfort of my own room.

Very rarely, will you see me plugged into my mp3 with a cuppa beside me at the fastfood place/cafes/library. I can't concentrate with music blarring into my ears while trying to memorise definitions and understanding concepts.

In fact, I do not exactly love the library when i am prepping for a paper. The extreme silence (even clearing of throat/unzipping of bags sound like a noise hazard) gets on my nerves such that I feel extremly uncomfortable. I can't even whisper properly to my study mate and having resort to scribbling messages to her on paper -_-III

It has also been quite a while since graduation, I took to the library to settle down for casual reading/research/study.

Was at the Bishan community library to work on a research for a proj and though I skipped doing it on the levels reserved for silent studying, I opted for the cafe on the ground floor. The small cafe, mayb with a capacity of 10 tables max, had a mix crowd of families/teens/young adults. The noise level was comfortable (with the kids going higher a pitch at times but still bearable) and there was NO hush hush to death silence. I felt very much at home with a warm cuppa of mocha latte and my lappie as I typed away.

Shiok and very conducive.

After watching this piece of video of how a guy who lost both his arms in an unfortunate accidents years ago yet mastered playing the piano using his feet, I can't help feeling overwhelmed by his stellar determination, positivity and passion for life.

He truly humbled me during that couple of minutes of his rendition of the piano piece. A piano student myself, learning to play the piano using both hands takes alot of effort, discipline and practise, hence imagine using both feet to play!

Quote "Who defines the piano has to be played only using hands?"
"You can choose to give up and allow life to pass you by or simply living it to the fullest."

A colleague shared a piece of news on yahoo singapore where some people seemed riled about males (namely the husbands/bfs) lending a hand or shoulder to their other half (female) to carry their bags.

Honestly, what's the big deal/ruckus about? I don't see a problem with a man offering to help his woman carry her bag. In fact it shows how sweet and how much he cares of the lady of his eye.

In my opinion, helping your other half to carry her bag is only wrong if:

1) The gal INSISTS the guy carry it for her EVERYTIME. This is a case of going overboard and if I am the guy, I will willingly take the bag and... slap it in the gal's face.

What a warm night it was last night.

Woke up a couple of times to quench my thirst with glasses of iced water (mental note to self: never use 'chilled water' aka aircon water).

Had a smart-alec moment while waiting for the train home ydae. The platform was plastered with XX brand of sardines and hey presto it came to my mind:

Yeah taking the train home during peak is equivalent to being packed like sardines.

I realised for the last couple of entries. I have been talking about FOOD.

Another entry dominated by my food over-ruled brain.

Foodie trail 1:
Tried the Mahantten Fish Market's seafood platter with the BF and a pal. In comparison to Fish n Co's the former paled in terms of taste (the rice was soggish) and portions (small prawns!). The only saving grace was the melt-in-your-mouth grilled fish. For $33.90, you are better of just ordering their signature fish dishes. Though I am less than impressed with the seafood platter, I will be going there again to savour the grilled fish mains.

Top with another $4.90 for soup-of-the-day and a glass (very big) of drink (ice tea, fizzy drinks).

Foodie Trail 2:
Aston's Express grilled fish with herb. Delicous. My second serving in less than a week. The mother tried the breaded fish. Bigger portion than its grilled counterpart (maybe coz of the breaded crumbs?!) and very crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Both thumbs up! Fish lovers should swim there like now now!

Foodie Trail 3:
Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Ngee Ann City outlet
I discovered tucking into dinner around the timing of 5 to 6pm is perfecto. No crowds = no snaking queues. I get to choose my preferred table coz the eatery is less than half filled and the overall atmosphere is just so much more relaxing.

Fave dishes whilst dining there - Si chuan ma po tou fu, gu lu rou and xiao long bao.

Yums! This week's food trail hit the spot totally.
